Mr. Alvin Carlton “Pokey” Brown Sr., age 88, of the Longview Community of Bedford County, died Saturday, August 31, 2013.

A native of Bedford County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Alvin Calvin “Farmer” Brown and Josie Lee Williams. He was born at home in the Longview Community in Bedford County.In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eddie Ruth Douglas Brown, a son, Alvin C. Brown, Jr.; two brothers, Travis and Richard Franklin Brown; two sisters Mattie Hurst and Sarah Pence.

He was a World War II veteran. Decorations include EAME Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Service Stars, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and the Victory Medal of World War II. Mr. Brown spent his life time as a farmer in his early years, as a carpenter in the construction industry in later years, and as a golfer in his retirement years. He was a member of Longview Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Bettye (Eddie) Stacy and Barbara (Jim) Newsom of the Longview Community; three sons, Mike (Linda) Brown of Murfreesboro, Coy (Pamela) Brown and Jay (Rhonda) Brown of the Longview Community; daughter-in-law, Barbara Brown of the Longview Community; fourteen grandchildren, Brian (Melissa) Stacy, Brent (Betty) Stacy, Brandon (Brandy) Stacy, Carl Brown, Kayla Brown Tish (Ken) Overall, Joshua (CJ) Brown, Kellie Brown, William (Heather) Brown, Clinton Brown, Christopher Brown, James Handy, Jonathan Handy and Justin Handy; eighteen great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren.

Visitation will be Monday, September 2, 2013 beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2013 from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. Willis Pope, Rev. Kenneth Neill, Charles Murphree and William King officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow at Pressgrove Cemetery in Bedford County.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers
