Mr. Charles “Chapel Hill Charlie” Dunaway, age 82, died Sunday, December 1, 2024 at his home in Chapel Hill after an extended illness. Charlie was born in Pelham, Alabama and was a son of the late Glen Robert and Anna Lou Gwin Dunaway. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Nancy Elizabeth Pack Dunaway, who died in 2016; sisters, Carolyn Moore and Debbie Gravette; and a brother, Lelan Dunaway.
“Chapel Hill Charlie”, as he was known by his many friends and co-workers at Channel 2 in Nashville, retired after 50 years with WKRN, where he worked as a camera man and studio supervisor. Charlie was also active in the Chapel Hill Community. He was a member of Holts Corner Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon for many years, a former member of the Jaycees, and a member of the Shelbyville Moose Lodge #2197. For many years he donated his time to the Chapel Hill Lions Club by filming and producing videos of the “Lions Superpull of the South Truck and Tractor Pull”.
Mr. Dunaway is survived by daughters, Susan Witty, Chapel Hill, TN, Wendy Newsom, Chapel Hill, TN, Martha Sue Hall, Fairview, TN; sister, Ida Lou Cole, Mobile, AL; brother, Donald Gravette, Jacksonville, FL; four grandchildren, Clyde (Vicky) Ragsdale, Jennifer (Josh) Curtis, Nickie (Jesse) Burns, Elizabeth (Alex) Newsom; nine great grandchildren.
Family members will receive friends on Friday, December 6, 2024 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home. A Celebration of Charlie’s Life will follow at 4:00 p.m. from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Chatman and Rev. Edd Luna officiating.
