Mr. Ellis Mealer, Jr. age 92, of Chapel Hill, Tennessee, died Monday morning, February 13, 2023 in Columbia, Tennessee. Mr. Mealer was born in Chapel Hill and was a son of the late Dora Estelle Robinson Mealer and Ellis Carlton Mealer, Sr. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Ball, Ruby Hill, Bessie Mealer, Clara Mealer, Dora Ruth Mealer; brothers, J. D. Mealer, Sr., James Mealer, Newt Mealer; and son-in-law, Richard Hill.
Ellis was very active in Chapel Hill during his life. He was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church in Chapel Hill and served as a deacon for over 50 years. He also served as the Church Treasurer and song leader for many of those years. Mr. Mealer was a former Alderman for the Town of Chapel Hill and was a member of the Chapel Hill Coffee Club. Ellis was employed for 38 years with Genesco Shoe Company of Chapel Hill and retired as a supervisor in 1995.
Mr. Mealer is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marie Pugh Mealer, Chapel Hill, TN; daughters, Sandra Hill, Chapel Hill, TN, Glenda (Iston) Ray, Panama City, FL.; grandchildren, Bryan (Robin) Hill, Emily (Travis) Darnell; step-grandson, Iston Ray Jr.; five great grandchildren; five step great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Family members will receive friends on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, February 16, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. Tim McGehee and Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Swanson Cemetery in Chapel Hill.
Bryan Hill, Travis Darnell, Jamie Gentry, J. D. Mealer, Greg Hill, and Ricky Mealer will serve as pallbearers.
The family of Mr. Mealer would like to give special thanks to Ronnie and Diane Curtis, Joe and Faye Coble, Tommy and Jane Howell, the entire Smyrna Baptist Church congregation and the Chapel Hill Community for their help, love, and support shown to Ellis and his family during his illness.
