Loretta Jean "Nanny" Stewart (Crowell), age 89, born on March 15, 1935, passed away peacefully at her Donelson, Tennessee home, where she had resided for 60 years, on March 6, 2025, surrounded by her adoring family.
Loretta was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and an exceptional great-great-grandmother whose life was defined by unwavering love and dedication to her family. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 46 years, Mr. Charles D. Stewart; her parents, Ida Mae Crowell (Vaughn) and Richard M. Crowell of Chapel Hill, Tennessee; and her siblings, Junior, Johnny, Jimmie, Ruby, and Mary Louise.
She is survived by her daughters, Victoria Louise (Herbert) Wood and Kimberly Dawn (Wade) Reed; her grandchildren, Desiree C. Brewington, Heather N. Greer, and Kevin M. (Alyssa) Greer; her great-grandchildren, Alexis Henley, William (Adrianna) Adams, Vivienne Angelique, Chloe Maddox, and Caden Greer; and her great-great-grandchild, Victoria Lively.
Loretta dedicated her life to her family, serving as the matriarch and foundation for generations. She gave birth to her first daughter, Vickie, in 1953 and welcomed her second daughter, Kim, in 1967. She spent the rest of her life nurturing and caring for her loved ones. She was always there with a warm hug, a kind smile, and words of encouragement. Her love for laughter and deep sense of compassion made her a source of comfort and strength to all who knew her.
Loretta very much enjoyed any time that she could spend with her loved ones. She especially loved teaching her great-granddaughter, Chloe, some of her favorite card games and had begun teaching her great-great-granddaughter, Victoria, those same games. But Loretta wouldn’t let them win just because they were little — she wanted them to truly learn how to play.
An avid reader with a sharp mind, Loretta stayed well-informed about current events, delighted in spirited debates about the world around her, all while sipping on her cherished treat, a McDonald's Caramel Frappé. She was especially passionate about football, possessing an impressive knowledge of players and teams across the league.
Loretta was a God-fearing woman who lived her life guided by faith and the Golden Rule. She sought to treat others with kindness and grace, always striving to make the Lord proud through her actions and her heart.
Her absence leaves a profound void in the lives of those who love her, but her legacy of love, strength, and wisdom will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.
A celebration of Loretta’s life will be held on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home in Chapel Hill, Tennessee. Interment will follow at the Crowell Family Cemetery.
May she rest eternally in the embrace of Our Lord, until we meet again. We love you, always.
