Mary Ann Smith

Mrs. Mary Ann Harwell Smith, age 89, completed her journey from College Grove, Tennessee to Heaven on December 3, 2022, after a life well lived. Mary Ann was born on November 15, 1933 to Matthew Thomas and Ina Claudia Harwell as their only child. They moved to College Grove when she was four and has lived there her entire life. Mrs. Smith married her loving husband of 60 years, Charles Briggs Smith, Jr., who died in 2011. She also was preceded in death by a son, Charles Briggs Smith III, who died in 2013.

Mary Ann was a talented pianist, artist, and painter. She loved to read, talk to or e-mail her friends and take care of “Pretty Girl”, her beloved cat. She worked at the Williamson County Health Department, and later, the Rutherford County Health Department from which she retired as the office manager. Mrs. Smith was an active member for 85 years of the College Grove United Methodist Church. She held fast her belief in God and was a prayer partner to many, but not more than for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, who they affectionately called “Nanny”.

Mrs. Smith is survived by her daughter, Claudia Corlette (Jerry) Flippen, College Grove, TN; son, Thomas Wyatt (Teresa Ann) Smith, Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Bonnie (Eric Graham) Tucker, Katherine Maeve Smith, Matthew Wyatt Smith; great grandchildren, Luke Tucker and Owen Tucker.

Family members will receive friends on Thursday, December 8, 2022 from 9:30 until 11:00 am at Lawrence Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am from the Chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Rev. Pam Wells officiating. Burial will follow in College Grove Cemetery.

Jerry Flippen, Wyatt Smith, Matthew Smith, Eric Tucker, Luke Tucker, Owen Tucker, Jimmy Cromer and Jim Wilson will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Bonnie Tucker, Katherine Smith and members of the College Grove United Methodist Church.
