Samuel Rufus Crowell passed away Sunday July 2, 2017. He was born July 28, 1924 in Shelbyville, Tennessee to the late Emmitt Allen and Sallie Anne Parsons Crowell. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Stephenson Crowell.
He honorably served his country in the United States Navy as a pilot in World War II and in Korea. He earned his degree in electrical engineering in 1948 as a graduate of Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (Tennessee Technological University) and performed both military and civilian roles during his career. He contributed to projects related to aeronautical and space programs at various military installations. He enjoyed the challenges and rewards of aviation, world travel and engineering projects and was a devoted family man. He was a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association and the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association. He maintained an active interest in the aviation industry constructing experimental aircraft during his retirement years.
He is also survived by his children, Susan Moore (husband Kevin) of Charleston, South Carolina and Larry Crowell (wife Susan) of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee; and his grandchildren Caitlin Moore of Washington D.C. and Samuel and Mary Crowell of Soddy Daisy, Tennessee.
A private graveside service will be held at the Crowell's Chapel Lutheran Church Cemetery on Halls Mill Road in Shelbyville, Tennessee with interment to follow.
