Mr. William Thomas “Bill” Hartley, Sr., age 82, of Chapel Hill, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday morning, October 22, 2014 in Columbia, Tennessee. Mr. Hartley was born in Williamson County and was a son of the late Leonard Palford Hartley and Alta Mae Hartley Dyer Parchman. He served his country in the United States Army and retired as a Sergeant First Class after 21 years of service, serving during both the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. Mr. Hartley received many commendations during his military career including the Silver Star. After retirement from his military career, Mr. Hartley worked in the civilian sector, and later, retired from the former Heil-Quaker Corp. of Lewisburg. He was a member of the Chapel Hill Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 11122, the Chapel Hill Coffee Club and loved to play Rook, collect knives and coins, spending time fishing and was an avid NASCAR fan. Mr. Hartley was a member of the Chapel Hill Cumberland Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Duke Dyer.
Mr. Hartley is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Thelma Hartley, Chapel Hill, TN; children, Pamela Diane (Chris) White, Chapel Hill, TN, Patricia Ann (Donnie) Glasscock, Lewisburg, TN, Connie Lynn (Clay) Pettit, Belfast, TN, Cheryl Denise (Gary) Mangrum, Lewisburg, TN, William Thomas (Laurie) Hartley, Jr., Laws Hill Comm., Johnny Dale (Stacey) Hartley, Sr., Chapel Hill, TN; grandchildren, Stephanie (Will) Barron, Candi Glasscock, William T. (Jenny) Hartley, III, Elizabeth (Tim) Cook, SSgt. Christopher (Nacole) Hartley, Sr., Amanda Hartley, Johnny (Carrie) Hartley, Jr., AZAN Brian Hartley, Matthew Mangrum, Samuel Hartley, Cameron Hartley; fourteen great grandchildren; niece, Wanda (Frankie) Scott.
Family members will receive friends on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Lawrence Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from the chapel of Lawrence Funeral Home with Bro. Michael Davenport officiating. Burial, with military honors, will follow in Reed-Walker Cemetery near Chapel Hill.
William Hartley, Jr., Johnny Dale Hartley, Sr., Gary Mangrum, Clay Pettit, Samuel Hartley and Will Barron will serve as active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be grandchildren and great grandchildren, the Chapel Hill Coffee Club, members of Chapel Hill VFW Post 11122, Donnie Glasscock, Chris White, Lamar Leonard, Doug Kincaid and Frankie Scott.
